Why Private Yoga Classes?

Ever walked into a group yoga class and felt completely overwhelmed? Maybe you found yourself pushing too hard to keep up, comparing yourself to those around you, not using modifications in fear of looking weak? Perhaps you felt the teacher overlooked you when you needed help getting into a pose. Group yoga classes can be intimidating, especially if you're new to yoga.

That's why private classes are great. Yes, the price is higher but you're paying for the undivided attention and customized class. A private class is designed completely around your needs and eases you into a safe home practice or prepares you to feel more confident to join group classes. You can learn at your own pace, set your own goals, and know that if you feel uncomfortable at any point, if you speak up you will be heard.

For me, personally, I didn't feel that I learned how to breathe or get into poses properly in group classes early on. In my first vinyasa class, though I'd been practicing online and understood the basics, I felt extremely uncomfortable. I was 19 years old and the entire class, in this all levels class, was doing what I felt to be gymnastics/show-offy movements before class even began. My first, and only, adjustment experience in that class was in downward facing dog. The teacher came in quickly, pulled my hips too high, and left before I had a solid foundation. I almost fell over and was in pain. That did not leave a good first impression. I didn't return to that class, or any vinyasa classes, for quite some time. I learned mostly online, watching YouTube and dvds. For years, the only group classes I would attend were Vinyasa led by a friend of mine or Svaroopa Yoga, which is a restorative style of yoga. I learned to love adjustments in my Svaroopa classes.

Now this is only my experience, but it is to let you know that you absolutely can learn yoga outside of a studio! (Please note I'm not insulting studios either; this was simply my experience as a beginner about 15 years ago.)
