Intro & Self care for Caregivers

Taking time, even a few minutes a day, is so important as a caregiver. It's also the hardest thing. Often, as a caregiver, you find yourself giving more and more of yourself away. Helping others, focused on their needs, constant worry and thinking of what needs to be done next. Or perhaps, you're caring for a sick or elderly loved one. No matter the strength of love between you, the emotional toll can be great. Unfortuntely, you can't continue caring for others as well if that continues.
What is my definition of a Caregiver?
I believe a caregiver is ANY ONE taking care of another being. Some examples: A child care provider (nanny, babysitter, day care worker, ect), an elderly caregiver (family or a professional), nurse, teacher, parent, even pet care providers.
So how can you learn to step back and care for yourself?
1. Set healthy boundaries - learn what you are comfortable with and what you aren't. Stick to it! Whether at home or work.
2. Stay hydrated
3. Eat healthy and regular meals
4. Move your body - this may be through dance, yoga, walking, hiking, ect.
5. Meditate regularly
6. Find quiet time to read or relax
7. Discover a new hobby
8. Make time to be fully present with family or go out with friends
9. Spend time grounding in nature - perhaps sitting outside, watching the sunset, walking.
I'm not saying you need to do all this or even every day. These are simply suggestions to keep your mind centered and nervous system relaxed.

Who am I to give you these suggestions?
Hi! My name is Betsy and I worked as a Caregiver for children and elderly for 20 years. I experienced many ups and downs throughout the years. I have so many wonderful memories and always loved my jobs. However, providing care for others is often quite a stressful and emotional experience, especially as I'm empathic and feel others emotions as clearly as my own. I wasn't always able to care for myself as I needed to. Around 2015, my back felt as though it was falling apart, my emotions were a roller coaster and I just could not relax. Yoga and Reiki helped to keep me centered, taking me out of my head and in to my heart. I've spent years learning to calm my nervous system and improve my mindset through trial and error. I'm so happy to be able to use my experience to help others going through the same.
