How to set up a Home Yoga space

For many, creating a home yoga practice seems like a challenging task. However, with the right mind frame and a dedicated spot, you can easily begin today.
A home yoga practice is life changing! I personally prefer to practice at home as it gives you a chance to focus on your own needs mentally and physically. You learn to flow and breathe at your own pace, in your own time, and truly feel what is happening within your mind and body. If you're intimidated entering a group class or don't feel comfortable chanting in public, giving yourself permission to practice at home gives you the opportunity to dive deeper in to the practices without judgement or comparing yourself to others.
A dedicated space & equipment: Find a quiet area of your home where you can set up a yoga mat, blocks/props, and maybe an alter for essential oils, books and journals. I've used the kitchen, living room, porch, and even the space next to my bed. Try out different spots if necessary, as long as it's an area you can spend time uninterrupted.
Daily Practice Routine: Set aside a certain amount of time each day to use this space specifically for yoga and meditation.
Decide what you would like to focus on. Certain areas of your body, calming emotions, connecting to yourself, slowing your mind and thoughts, ect.
The most important part is to listen to your body. Pay attention to how you feel throughout your practice and continue with what makes you feel great! Let go of judgements and pat yourself on the back any time you show up to practice. Remember that every day is different, some days may feel easier to show up than others and that's okay!
Explore different styles: Try vinyasa, yin, restorative, Iyengar, kundalini, or more. See what fits you best. Explore breathing practices, meditations, journaling, and reading material. That said, take it slow and steady. You can even focus on just one pose a day to really become comfortable with yourself as your home practice grows.
Music: Find relaxing, soothing music. It may be tempting to listen to mainstream music, but honestly the lyrics can often be more negative than you realize, resulting in a less relaxed vibe. If you do want lyrics, maybe really listen to the lyrics first and see how it makes you feel. If you still feel great after and the lyrics don't seem negative, then you can add it to the playlist.
I suggest finding reiki or meditation music. I also like chanting, sounds of nature/animals, and Native American inspired music. Relaxing music helps you to find comfort in the silence while learning to sit with yourself.
